I chose to measure myself and my boyfriend, Michael for this exercise in ergonomics. I found that for each of us, our wingspan was almost equal length to our heights. There were not many similarities between our measurements to one another. He is 6’3” and I am 5’6”. This made for drastic differences in our measurements. With that said this made me consider how I would design for two individuals with heights that are dramatically different. For one, the heights of cabinets, counter tops, sinks, the arms on chairs, tables, and shower walls/shower heads would have to be taken into serious consideration. All of these items would have to be to at such a height that both people could use them comfortably. I believe most of these would have to be adjustable (shower head, cutting surfaces, etc…). In his current home he has to bend his head to an uncomfortable degree just to be able to wash his hair. As designers we need to design these elements to suit the needs of our clients and not depend on industry standards to determine what we place in homes and commercial buildings. It is our job to consider humans, and that means in totality (height, weight, shape, disabilities, likes and dislikes, etc…).

Vanstory Lighting Company Field Trip

After visiting the Vanstory Lighting Company I came away having learned a tremendous amount about the differences between the use of LED lights and Fluorescent. I found it interesting that based on the markets now (at a commercial level) it almost as cost efficient to use LED lighting as compared to Fluorescent. I was also surprised at the amount of options of light fixtures that are available with a LED lamp. I went into the field trip expecting LED lights to be dimmer and more incandescent than Fluorescent. I was pleasantly surprised that they produce a similar amount of light, and yet their lifespan is much greater, and they are a greener product.

The article discussed a multitude of ways light affects us, and the environments we inhabit. Among the ways listed were nature, climate, and light and time vs. light and task. While discussing the nature aspect it was broken down into several variables in how people approached or reacted to their individual climates. In Japan they experience extreme weather during their summer and winter months from extreme heat during their summer and snow during their winters. They designed their dwellings to open up during the summers to allow for cross breezes to cool their space, and incorporated heated pools and fire pits to warm them when the winters became harsh. The article also spoke about the harsh light in Italy; and how the Italians modified their windows and their window treatments to embrace/celebrate the light; yet lessen the strength of its rays entering into their homes.

“Our perception of light-quality is intertwined both with our response to the local climate as well as with the task at hand” (Light Revealing Architecture, p. 12). In regard to light and time or light and task examples were given about Frank Lloyd Wright’s studios, and workspaces. FLW designed the studio spaces and libraries to have ample lighting as part of the overall design. It wasn’t exactly ingenuitive, the thought for needing natural light, but it was the way he approached it that was. The design itself revolved around the need for light, and human interaction with the space. The design took time of day into consideration as well, and what type of light would be useful to the occupants.

“… light…can make buildings be places that have special meaning for us, extending their value beyond mere functional use” (Light Revealing Architecture, p. 6). The article went into great depth to establish that we each as individuals experience and appreciate light in various ways based on several factors…upbringing, climate, exposure, geographical location, culture, etc… With that said I experience and view light much differently than maybe even my neighbor. Even growing up in the same geographical location our experiences have changed the way we view light. That could be a vacation, a grandparent that may live in another part of the country that we may have spent our summers with, or several other reasons.

Personally I have grown up in a home that does not have a lot of sunlight coming into the space. Now that I am on my own I tend to keep the curtains pulled closed in my apartment. Given that I am from Maryland originally our sunlight is not quite as harsh as the North Carolina sun, and I am not used to its intensity. Light also effects us at night. I grew up in a suburban neighborhood with only one or two street lamps to light the street, and now living in a city area with the lights shining 24/7 whether they are natural or artificial it feels like a constant bombardment of light. I have had serious difficulty sleeping for that reason. I have had to black out the windows at night so as not to be disturbed. With that said my roommate prefers to have the shades open and light pouring into the space. She grew up in North Carolina and used to it. To me, it does not only bother me visually but it also elevates the temperature. This is also something I am not used to. I prefer to be cooler.

As fall approaches I am also reminded of our climate differences. After experiencing North Carolina autumns for the past couple of years I have noticed that the leaves are not as vibrant, and do not vary in colors as in Maryland. With colder temperatures, and with sunlight not being as harsh the leaves turn sooner, and are deeper, more vibrant shades. I believe the colors we see in nature are connected to the light experienced in those climates and directly corresponds to how to alter our spaces.

On the topic of task, I know that in our studio space or example, light is a serious issue both during day and night hours. During the daylight hours light streams from all areas except for the 4^th floor. It is bright, and at times too bright where we are forced to draw the shades. At night there is not adequate lighting for us to complete our work easily, and we as students have had to purchase our own individual lights to accommodate for this. We are mostly relying on natural light inside of the studio vs. artificial. There are both positive things and drawbacks to this as previously stated.

It has been an eye-opening experience, having read this article. I did not previously think about how we experience light so differently as individuals than others, and what factors into these differences.

Light and Health

Being a cancer survivor this is not the first time my attention has been drawn to the relationship between light and wellbeing. Often times when needing to heal and recover I needed darkness in my room to allow for sleep. This is exceptionally difficult to achieve in hospitals. Light leaks from everywhere. It is not the natural light, however, that is the problem, it is the artificial. It leaks from under the door cracks, the emergency lights, and lights used for way finding once the sun sets. However, natural light had a huge impact on how I would feel each day. Should I feel just well enough to sit up and be by a window my mood, and my health would be tremendously better. So I can relate to the article when it spoke about circadian rhythm.

I found it interesting when the article spoke about prolonged exposure to artificial light, or irregular lighting and the effects it would have on the human body, or SAD (seasonal affective disorder). Many times I do not think that we, even as designers take into account the effect of the lighting we place into spaces in the sense of health risks. The fact that nurses are having higher occurrences of cancer when working the night shift is alarming. Honestly, I would never have thought to study that prior.

I also found it interesting when the reading spoke about the differences in our productivity, and our ability to function as compared to daylight savings time. It makes sense that our bodies would function and changed based on the cycle of the sun vs. manmade hours. I question if we would be healthier if we simply went by the sun’s cycle vs. modifying the hourly system.

These articles have certainly raised questions, and were thought provoking. I would be curious to do more research on the matter.

My goals at the beginning of the semester were to think outside the box vs. being too literal, to be more confident in my ideas as a designer, to explore different approaches to the design process, and figure out which style is best for me, and to become familiar with other designer’s work to expand on ideas, ways of thinking, and understanding. I feel like I have done well to think outside of the box, and to expand upon my ideas. I also feel as though I have found the design technique that works for me, which is to first go to my sketchbook and draw out my ideas as well as to jot down ideas that tie into my drawings. I have not become as familiar with other designer’s work as I had hoped I would at the beginning of the semester. Instead I have relied more on what is within me. I would like to take the opportunity over the summer to emerge myself in famous designer’s work, and some not so famous.

I have learned a lot about myself this semester in the way I design, the way I work with others, and about allowing my design voice to shine through. I found that in working individually my work was not as strong as when I had peers to enhance the projects. They were able to fill in the gaps where I was not as strong, and vice versa. I do feel that working at a smaller scale (groups of 3 or 6) my design voice was stronger than at a larger scale. Once we moved into a group of 12 it became more difficult to maintain our individual design voices. While we were able to incorporate our original 12 concept words, and make sure that each were represented in the over all design, when it came down the details it became more of a challenge for each of us to have a say so in what the designs would look like. This was no because we were not being vocal, but because each of us has such strong opinions we were not able to appease everyone, and therefore compromises were made.

I would say even though writing has been a key component to our design process this semester from the very beginning, it was not until the end of this semester that I found it to be the most helpful. During the first few projects we concentrated on narrative writing, and to me that was not as useful as informative writing. To me writing is more imperative when it is time to refine my work, and not as much when originating ideas. However, writing is useful at every stage, I just believe it comes in different forms for each of us. For me at the beginning stage I tend to write concept words, and ideas of how things can work together. I would like to say that narrative writing did allow me to focus on what it would be like to inhabit the space, and what the transition would be like from room-to-room. Without that writing component I did not put myself into the client’s shoes quite as much.

The original strengths I listed in wi1 were that I am detail oriented, dedicated, inquisitive and enjoy exploring various avenues, that I have interest in several areas that can be combined into my designs, that I am adventurous and willing to take on new challenges, and that I also listed my photography skill set. I still believe that these are my strong suits. I would add finding inspiration to my list. After Patrick and Claire selected Blakeni and I to speak on inspiration a few weeks ago I realized how accurate they were in selecting us. Initially when I saw my name under that category I questioned their reasoning, I did not at that time I feel that it was accurate. However, after brainstorming and going through my design process, and how I come up with my idea I realized that it is definitely I skill set I possess, and something I show strength in. I can now also add computer programs such as illustrator and photoshop to my list of skills. After an intense semester I have had to embrace computer programs to further enhance and progress my designs. I have largely relied on these programs, and now feel more comfortable with using them, whereas before I was only familiar with hand drawn and acad drawings and renderings.

The first image is one of my first boards, the second is from our second round as a group of 3, and the third is my individual board from the last project. You can see the progression from my first board, to having it be a group collaboration, to taking what I have learned from my peers and applying it. I recognize that we are always learning, always evolving, and we can always grow when encouraged by our peers. I feel this semester has been a huge success in shaping us as designers, and allowed us to learn from our peers and strengthen our work that much more. For the first time I feel we truly recognize in ourselves what we both possess and lack, and whom we can go to, to fill in the gaps.

1st yr Crits

Today we, as second years, had the pleasure of attending the first year's final critiques. It was both interesting, and surreal. I remember very clearly being in their position last year, and how nervous I was.

Overall I was pleased with what I saw, and am excited to see what they produce in the future. I was asked to critique one student, and I chose to critique Kristy Stroud. She did an excellent job in her presentation. She spoke clearly, her boards demonstrated her concepts well, and she went above and beyond what was required of her. During her presentation she used her deliverables well. By walking us through the model she constructed we, as the audience, were able to get a better sense of what the space would be like to inhabit.

I would offer a few suggestions moving forward though... Her perspectives, while well drawn and rendered, deserve to be showcased and should be larger when presenting. I would also suggest that she use lighter colors when rendering. It was difficult to see the details, and read them from far away. She has a good technique when rendering, and it would not be difficult to make these minor adjustments, and make her work that much more powerful.

I would also suggest that the documents be mounted to make them pop out, and be the showcase of her presentation. After putting in such long hours into designing, you should pay special attention to how you will be delivering them.

Also, it was noticeable that during the presentation she covered her drawings while displaying her model. She held it directly in front of her drawings while she walked us through the model. It would be a better usage to go back and forth between the model and the drawings so that the audience can get the entire experience.

I would like to commend her on a job well done. It is difficult to stand in front of a large crowd and present and defend your work. She did an excellent job, with minor issues, that can be easily fixed in the next presentation.

Congratulations, Kristy, on the completion of first year, and good luck as a second year! You'll do great!

Practice first to see how many passes of knife using normal pressure will cut through a sample of material and use a guide for scoring. Keep in mind the sharpness of the blade.

6. Stay in the same tense throughout.

7. Write as your project is progressing. Don’t leave it until the end.

9. Overlap materials at connection points for gluing, taking into account the thickness of the material and frame. Hold elements together until glue takes hold and place at correct angle to set. Use triangle edge to reinforce placement of elements when gluing at 90 degrees.

Upon merging with Symbiosis we maintained the idea of incorporating our original concept words that we relied largely upon when we designed our previous structure, Pinnacle. My original word was Epiphany, and has shown a prominent voice within the design. In Jenga 5.0 and 6.0 we arrived at the concept of Pinnacle based on my original word. The Pinnacle was the final experience that illuminates the sky, and provides a moment of clarity.

Moving forward we carried this idea into our new structure “Synergy.” Visually as you move your eye from the ground level to the top you see a progression building up. Each moment as you move upwards builds upon the previous striking a desire within to reach that final moment, that final experience, the Epiphany.

You also see a correlation between the new structure and the way I utilized my kit of parts in Jenga 1.0 and 2.0. As you enter the space my kits of parts (three solids) obstructs your view of the rest of the unit. However, as you proceed, information in unveiled as you turn each corner. Once you reach the stairs and begin your way upward, you ultimately reach your moment of unveiling and epiphany. Each solid creates a similar experience of epiphany. As you transition within the space you alternate between a lack of information and having full disclosure, each solid having a purpose hidden within. This concept is furthered through the finishes. As you enter into the space there are dark finishes on the floors and walls, and as you reach the top level the finishes get lighter; the solids remain in white. This continues to give you the experience of traveling from darkness into light, providing you with a complete experience.

Similarly, our new structure goes back and forth between having information about the over all space be at your disposal and having your line of sight be obstructed, as the rest of the building remains a mystery. As you continue your journey to the top more information is revealed until you reach your final destination, the observation deck. This further utilizes my original word by broadening your view of the city of Vic. Sitting high upon the hill you are able to survey everything below, no longer having your view obstructed, no longer having lingering questions.

I find it to be a huge accomplishment to have maintained our original 12 words, and for each to have a strong presence in the final 18 story structure. Our original words were twist, tilt, revolve, reverberate, protrude, edge, leap, clockwork, spark, beehive, ignite, and epiphany. Each can be seen in one form or another. The building twists in a clockwork motion, and revolves, reverberates, and protrudes over the edges. As you leap from floor to floor epiphanies are unveiled. Interest is ignited, and sparks of intrigue keep you making your way to the peak. Items are tilted in various angles, and the overall structure goes from a wide base to a narrow top resembling a beehive. It was with great attention to detail, and strong design voices that we were able to accomplish this goal.

Jenga 7.1

When meeting over the weekend with Symbiosis we discovered a similar design language of angles, and an atrium effect in the center of our structures.

Together we formed Sinergia, Spanish for synergy: “the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects”. We have decided as a group to relocate just north of Vic, Spain near the reservoir in Vilanova de Sau up in the hillside above overlooking the water.

Together we have axial navigation, and a stacking of our buildings. We have chosen to separate out original structures and combine them in a new way to better relate to both of our original concepts coming out of Jenga 6.0. We are focusing on voids and solids, taking that concept from the surrounding area where there are areas of openness and areas that are more closed off as you reach the mountain regions. As we move into Jenga 7.0 our focus is on materials native to our destination in Spain, as well how our structure interacts with the land, and its surroundings including other structures in the area. We are considering materials such as crema marfil, tungsten, zinc, quartz, and copper (all native materials) for our structure.

5.0 Charrette Reflection

I took part in my first charrette on Monday. We were instructed to do two, one-hour charrettes with two teams of three. Our first team was “interlocking.” We found that we quickly were able to formulate design ideas, and our individual concepts were compatible with theirs. We quickly realized each other’s strengths and assigned the tasks accordingly. Never having taken part in a charrette before I found the process invigorating. It forced us to commit to an idea and move forward quickly, whereas the typical design process may take up to a few days. I was surprised at our success, and the ideas that came to the table so quickly with our first group. The second group we worked with was “beaucoup.” I did not feel that we were able to combine our structures as cohesively as with the previous group. However, we did quickly formulate ideas, and produce what was expected within the hour’s time. We formed what would be “straight curves” should our new design be chosen and we move forward. I feel, however, that in moving forward the design we had with “interlocking,” now “pinnacle” would be a stronger design. We each had some form of forced navigation, and obstacles that you must go around to find your destinations. Together we formed a pyramid-like structure where you reach your “epiphany” (my original word) in the final stage of your journey. It was an intriguing, and interesting design, one I hope to move forward with, and explore. With “beaucoup” and “straight curves” our structures have very distinct and different design languages. Their original structures embody curvilinear lines, and waves, whereas ours is about right angles, and geometric shapes that encompass the necessities for living in these units, such as the bedrooms, kitchens, baths, etc… Overall I would be most pleased to work with “interlocking,” as I feel we will be able to accomplish whatever tasks are put before us the most successfully.

Narrative and Diagrams- Circuit

As you advance to the complex composed of 3 units it begins to expose a passageway that envelops the inhabitant. It allows for spatial navigation in three routes not only to get to private residences but also to the public spaces. Each space has starting and ending points formed by solids, and only one navigational route to each subsection of the individual spaces. Within the spaces we each designed the solids perform the same actions as the corridors that now link the spaces together. The solids prohibit you from taking more than one path to each individual node and center. In a circuit you stop communication in one place and transfer or direct it to another in order to complete the information being processed. One cannot deviate from the path put before them, because obstructions prohibit them from doing so; their journey is predetermined. The public spaces represent the breaks in a circuit where the complex allows comfort, and community engagement.

Jenga 2.0 Reflection

After viewing the work of my peers it is my desire to strengthen my body of work over all. I was able to see excellent demonstrations of board composition from a few of my peers such as Corry Mears, Abigail Buchanan, Faith Ramsey, Kara Kooy, and Phillip Snider. As I also saw exemplary models from some of the same people I listed above. It is my goal to learn from them, and others like them in order to improve my future projects.

I learned so much more about the design process when given the opportunity to revisit the previous project and elaborate on one of my spaces. I chose to completely change my design, however I kept my idea of built-ins through solids. I appreciate the opportunity to make my solids more sophisticated and to cater directly to the needs of the hypothetical inhabitants. While I know my model and my boards were not as sophisticated as I had hoped for them to be, and as much as I had strived for them to be, I do feel that it was a learning experience that I will take into the next phase of this series of projects and improve upon my last.

Jenga 2.0 - Epiphany- Unveiling

Dajana Nedic's word is "Squeeze." She personifies each space with a different iteration, and take on this original word.

11' x 32'-4" space- Rainforest was her main concept word for this space derived from her original word "squeeze." She explained this to mean that multiple layers, and inhabitants were squeezed into one area, and this reminded her of a rainforest in which many species coexist, and squeezed together making narrow opening, sometimes being unable to see where one thing ends and another begins. She utilized her kit of parts, being her two solids to create this feeling of being coiled over, under a covering of lights being her one solid. She communicates this well with her axonometric drawing of the space.

Diagram-

22' x 22' space- Dajana explores this spaces with a sense of distribution and imbalance. She uses two walls interlocking to delineate between her more private areas and public. The intersect on an axis and section off the bathroom. She uses her column in this space to be in all-in-one bathroom inclosure including the shower, waste elimination facilities, etc... I believe she used her kit of parts very well in this space. She squeezes you into one corner (the bathroom), and shows the stretch on the opposite side. Her best communicator was her floor plan in this space. It clearly shows how everything is linked, and which spaces perform which tasks.

22' x 32'-4" space- I believe she had the most fun with this space, and her exploration of the space using the word "tunnel." She described it as being influenced by ants, and the path they take in their ant hills. She used a curvilinear wall to demonstrate this effect, guiding you through the space. She uses her two columns as storage spaces, as well as "check-points" in the space. This too, demonstrates the life of an ant, in that they have certain areas of the ant hill that act as storage places, and where the queen would reside. Again in this space, I believe her plan acts as the best deliverable in communicating her intention for the space she designed.

Dajana spoke clearly during her presentation, and explained each of her spaces thoroughly, and gave the audience a true sense of inhabiting each space. Her visual elements further enhanced her presentation, and were easy to follow.

Jamaan Simons - Tilt

Jamaan Simons' spaces were based off of the word "tilt."

11' x 32'-4" space- This space was based off of the interpretation of the word tilt through the word "incline." Jamaan demonstrated the use of the idea of incline by creating a slanted floor transitioning you from public to private areas. He uses his kit of parts (two columns and a wall) successfully in this space. The two columns protrude at a slant from the kitchen blocking off the cooking area from the eating. The columns protrude from the wall creating a barrier between the kitchen and bedroom. I believe his use of Sketchup that was he enhanced with Podium was his most successful demonstration of the space, and gave the client/audience the best feel for the over all design, and what it would feel like to actually inhabit the space.

22' x 22' space- This space was based off of the exploration of the word tilt through the word "imbalance."Jamaan used the two walls and one column kit for this space. He again placed the space at a tilt, but leveled certain areas to provide for ideal usage of the space so that the furniture would not slide out of place, and so that the space would become uninhabitable. He used one of his walls to create a narrowing of a hallway creating a sense of imbalance, and inclosure. The other wall separated the more private areas from the public. I am somewhat uncertain after evaluating his space where he positioned his column, and what purpose it served. Again, I feel as though his digitally enhanced model in Sketchup serves as his best deliverable and communicator of the space.

22' x 32'-4" space- This space was inspired further by the word "tension."I must say that this space is my favorite of the three he designed. In this space he used the two solids as his kit of parts. It created a sense of intrigue, and gravitational pull, as well as the solids being pulled from two directions. He explained that each curvilinear solid acts as a space divider as well as a navigational tool directing your path throughout the larger space of the three designed. The solids appear as though they are giant floorboards being ripped from the floor and pulled upwards. As in the case with the other two spaces, his Sketchup model breaths the life of the space, and allows to feel as though we are in it, and experiencing his intention.

Jamaan spoke clearly during his presentation, however his volume was not high enough. Sitting a few rows back from where he was presenting I found it difficult to hear everything. I also am not sure if he mentioned each iteration of his original word when describing the space. Myself, and my fellow evaluator of his presentation had to compare notes when evaluating, and neither of us had that information until further probing the project. His visual elements were superb, and I feel he did an excellent job with his exploration of this project.

Jenga 1 - Epiphany

Epiphany explored through the word "UNVEILING."

The kit of parts I chose for this space was "two solids" out of the three choices also including "two columns and a wall" and "two walls and a column."

Once entering this space you are guided along the lines, and edges of each part of the solid in order to arrive at each destination, those being the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and living area. You are unable to see over the solids (they are 10' high) so you must continue to let yourself be guided by their lines. You have a maze-like experience, much like one you would experience as you are on your journey to epiphany.

Epiphany explored through the words "REAL vs. SURREAL."

Kit of parts: Two walls and a column.

In this space I played around with the question of "what is a wall?" I chose to make my two walls something less than expected. The first is a set of stairs leading to nowhere, where the one side facing the bedroom is left open with multiple cubbyholes for extra storage. The other wall is a funhouse mirror providing privacy in the bathroom, and separating it from the kitchen. I used an inverted ionic column as my column in the space, it is positioned in a central point between the living area and bedroom to allow for an increased amount of privacy in the bedroom. It spans 2' in diameter, and 14' high.

Epiphany explored through the word "LIGHT."

Kit of parts: One wall and two columns.

I chose this space for the use of "light" because it is narrow, and has six windows along one wall. As you enter into this space you enter in darkness, and are beaconed to light by the columns doubling as lights providing a soft glow. You are guided by the curvilinear wall to the light of the kitchen, and ultimately the flooding of light along the wall of the bedroom opposing the curvilinear wall. This, to me, was the ultimate personification of the journey one would go on in their search for enlightenment, and ultimately the strike of epiphany. You wander around in darkness until "light" is shed on the circumstance, whatever it may be.

Concept: Epiphany explored through…

LIGHT

As you enter the space, you enter in darkness, and navigate through the space being guided towards the light. However, there is a moment of light peering in between the curvilinear wall and the interior wall creating a mystical element as you first enter the space. As you make your way around the curvilinear wall being guided through the darkness you reach a bend in the wall that transitions you into a flooding of light (experienced in both daylight and night hours). You follow a moment of light beaconing you into the rest of the space. As you near it you see what is exhibiting the light and its grandeur. You enter the space it is guarding. Just then you are overcome with light. You have entered the kitchen. Once exiting the kitchen you make your way into the bedroom where there is an explosion of light from the wall of windows. You have completed your journey from darkness into light. You have experienced the epiphany.

UNVEILING

As you enter the space you are forced to follow the lines of the structures in order to reveal what is behind them, as well as within them. Each space unveils another use, and experience. Functions are carved from the structures themselves leaving you to explore every nook and cranny. You feel encapsulated by the structures, yet safe and secure. The passageways are left between each carving giving you a tunnel effect transitioning you between each space. This heightens your curiosity as you turn each corner. Within the two structures enclosed in the overall space you will find a kitchen, bedroom, resting area, and bathroom. You will find the bed hidden with the wall in the bedroom, and closet carved out facing the bathroom. Within the bathroom a space has a custom design for the toilet as well as the shower. Be careful not to overlook what is hidden within each space. Your mind will be intrigued, and what was once hidden will be unveiled and you will have your epiphany.

REAL vs. SURREAL

Be prepared for a surrealistic experience as you enter this space. You first approach an upside down ionic column leading you to transition into the space in search of calm and reality. You find this behind the thought provoking, unexpected things within. A funhouse mirror wall that reaches from floor to ceiling encloses the kitchen. It continues into an undulating ceiling mirroring what is below twisting, and transforming your outlook. Behind the wall is the bathroom. You reach a sense of normalcy and reality within that enclosure. However, the adjacent wall is comprised of stairs leading to nowhere. While at an extreme size it makes you want to embark upwards, but you see they meet the ceiling, and you begin your search again for reality. Behind wall of stairs you find the bedroom, again in place of relief you find some sanctuary. The opposite side of the wall of stairs facing into the bedroom is hallowed out, and has shelves to allow for extra storage within the space. Each part of your journey transitions you between reality and the unknown, a surreal experience much like the path from uncertainty to final point where you reach your epiphany.

Design Bio Update...

After the challenge of creating and committing to the designs of three spaces in 1.5 days I surprised myself in what I was able to accomplish. It took me a large portion of that time to commit to an idea, but once I did I was able to hit the ground running and produce models. While I was frustrated with the process and the time crunch I recognized it to be an important tool. Had I not been forced to commit in such a short period of time I may have drawn the process out for up to a week.

I have learned that I quickly generate ideas, and put pen to page the instant a project is presented to me, but it takes me a long time to actually combine my ideas and produce what has been asked of me. This is something I will have to overcome as a designer. I have noticed the way I formulate designs is very similar to the way I begin to write...I have to have a gut feeling, an emotion almost, an inspiration...without it nothing comes out. My objective for this semester as my design career continues to be shaped is to master obtaining that "feeling" at a quicker pace, and be able to commit speedily, and focus my immediate ideas into something fruitful.

I accept the challenges ahead of me this semester, and the ones beyond that. I welcome the changes, and the experiences that will mold me into the designer I am meant to be. I aim to push past the struggles, and come out on the other side stronger, more confident, and with a better way to cultivate and mold my ideas, processes, and designs.

When I think about the word “epiphany” I think about emphasis, divine intervention, manifestation, inspiration, unveiling, state of amazement, curiosity, sudden insight into reality verses surreal, and totality of the experience.

In each of the three spaces it is my desire to incorporate several of these influences into each. Pairing similar intentions for the individual spaces.

The space is 22’x32’-4”. As you enter you can either move to your left and be in the kitchen/dining area, or move to the right and enter the sleeping/bathing/personal reflection area. The two areas are dived by a curvilinear, floor to ceiling structure. As you follow the lines of the structure it bends around in a coil formation separating the bathing area from the sleeping/reflective area. It allows for privacy as well as a sense of mystery, and provides a mystic experience. At the beginning of the curvilinear structure the cabinets/food preparation units are built into the structure, as well as on the opposing side the murphy bed that folds both up and out to either sleep on or use as a couch.

A new semester…a new post…a new outlook?

Yesterday marked the first day of the spring 2011 semester. Patrick, my studio professor, presented us with the task of first choosing 3-5 goals for the upcoming semester, and then listing our personal strengths. Once listing a few strengths we were asked to pair ourselves with a few of our classmates that knew us well and have them list a few more…our group decided to take it a step further and also list some areas that we could grow as designers in….

First, the list of goals…

1. 1 .To think outside the box vs. being too literal (I struggle with this until I have my ideas pushed, and then I am able to expand, and branch out)

2. 2.To be more confident in my ideas as a designer. (I tend to offer multiple ideas after I have already chosen an idea to pursue, questioning my original idea instead of having confidence in them and continuing).

3. 3.To explore different approaches to the design process, and figure out which style is best for me.

4. 4.To become familiar with other designer’s work to expand on ideas, ways of thinking, and understanding.

The second exercise was to figure out which side of the scale we as designers, and individuals fell on in the “change style indicator” exercise. There were two sides to the scale “the conservers” and the “originator.” I fell on the “originator” side meaning that I traditionally challenge set rules and ideas, and advocate for change. Some of the set backs however, are that we tend to focus on individual practices vs. others’, and we also tend to abandon ideas for new ones, instead of following through. The other end of the spectrum tended to be detail oriented, and fixated on one course.

This picture that I took of my dad speaks to the way I design. I think in photography angles, color, lighting, and textures. When I design I think of how these things are effected, and how they alter the over all feeling or experience of what I am designing. Having a bent for photography has helped me tremendously in my thought process as well as in my design process.

Visual Communications Fall Semester 2010 Update

It's been forever. It's been one whirlwind of a year so far. Our first project last semester was to design and build a wall. We were split into two groups...the minimal wall and the rammed-earth wall. I was a part of the rammed-earth project, however, ours never got built due to zoning and other such reasons. We also designed a wellness center for recovering cancer patients located in Haw River, NC.

I'm going to use this post to update for last semester as much as possible, and post a later post to update for my visual communications class....

Ready?...Set?....Go!

Wall...
We first were instructed to think without concepts and design a wall, any wall of our choice as individuals...My choice? A wax wall. We only got as far as sketch models (you'll see those below), but I worked out the math and could have easily constructed the wall in a 4'x4' true scale. As you can see the model took many changes, including size (the largest did not work, the weight made it crack in half moments before our critique)...

Sadly, my idea was not chosen for the team wall. However, my team-member's wall, Audra, was chosen. And what an incredible idea it was...Rammed- Earth. I was fortunate enough to have my design for the wall chosen (you'll see the various iterations, and the final choice below), and we moved ahead to gain approval and materials. We unfortunately were not able to gain approval due to concerns that the structure(s) may collapse and harm the UNCG population. We instead moved forward with the minimal group's structure, and collaborated with them on the construction of the wall (pictures will follow later).

Wellness Center...

After this project, we were fortunate to receive a project that may later turn into an urban studio. The project was to design a wellness center for recovering cancer patients and their families. The intent was to include a multitude of programming ideas such a rock-climbing wall, gym, volley ball court, teaching kitchen, 3 suites for long-term stay, and the over-all structure to accommodate up to 12 occupants at any given time to visit the facility to be located in Haw River, NC. My team members (Caitlyn Lyle, and Nicole Ware) and I designed a structure that would appear to be modern and minimal from the outside, but to maintain a cozy, comforting feeling from within. As a cancer survivor, myself, I felt it important for the interior not to feel like a sterile environment, one similar to a hospital, but instead to have to feel like a home away from home.

Honfest is a Baltimore tradition. Every year women gather to compete for that year's "Hon." Honfest was started to praise the hardworking women of Baltimore, and of the rest of Maryland. A true Hon dresses in 60's attire, hair reaching high to the sky, and carries the spirit of Baltimore ("Bawlmer" as the natives call it) in her heart.

The remaining shots were taken at Papermoon, a diner in Baltimore.

Last Project Reflection

Through my own critique I learned a lot. It helps to have another eye when working, it is easy to make little mistakes, ones that could be corrected. In the future I will do field research when designing, so that I can have a better idea of how I should be designing for my client. I will also do more leg work to learn the standards. While I made a strong attempt on this project, I still have areas to work on. Over all I do not feel that I did a poor job, however, there is always room for improvement, and I will take the criticism I received and use it to better my future work.

Through observing other people's presentations we all certainly learn from our critiques and improve, thus the reason for critiques. People need to pay special attention to their board layout, make sure that they have secured things straight, spelled things right, and to not forget important elements such as dimensions and the north arrow. We need to pay closer attention to shadow when rendering, and we need to continue to work with sketchup and other computer aiding tools to better the quality of our work. Over all as first year student I feel we performed well, and we will certainly rise to the standard and quality of work as we are taught more and progress in the program.

The Sketchbook Scavenger Hunt...

CLUE ONE: STORYTELLING IN PERSPECTIVE
Suzanne's assignment was to draw two places on campus that hold significance to us. I chose the Alumni garden, and the bus stop outside of the Graham building.

During Suzanne's lecture today I felt inspired to explore my individual style, and to push myself in ways I have been hesitant to do so...For me, I'm hesitant to draw with pen and without the use of straight edges. Today, I left my pencil, and my ruler behind. While I think it's probable that my drawing would have been a little better with them, it was a freeing experience.

Something I've learned: Pen is permanent and so are bug guts...Nothing a little watercolor can't fix...As I was drawing a bug decided to grace my presence in the Alumni garden, it decided to leave its remains on my drawing. Slightly unfortunate, however the green splatter was ironically placed among the plants in my drawing.

I have been drawn to this space since I arrived in Greensboro back in August of 2009. I immediately fell in love with this garden. When I sit there on the bench donated by the 1964 class I glance at the flowers and the back of the Alumni House and ponder who may have sat where I am? What dreams did they discover at UNCG? I see it as one foot in the past, and an eye to the future. It's peaceful, and inspiring. I cannot wait to take my graduation photos there in May 2013. =) Thank you class of 1919 for this beautiful getaway.

This is outside of Graham. I catch the HEAT bus here every day. I chose to draw this space because it is something that will be unique to my first year, and a memory I wanted to hold onto in my first year sketchbook. Taking the HEAT bus has its moments of inconvenience (i.e. the fact that it stops by 7pm), but it has helped me immensely in my first year being without a parking pass. When I walk past this bus depot in years to come before graduation I will smile, and remember my first year fondly.

Monticello, UVA, Fallingwater trip...

IARc first year students recently traveled to Monticello, UVA, and Fallingwater...I was lucky enough to be one of them. I had an amazing time, and captured a little bit of their unique beauty. I have had the privilege of visiting Monticello and Fallingwater before, but I was able to see them in different ways than previously. I have a better appreciation after going through my first year of the program at UNCG for the details, the conscious/careful planning of every individual aspect that makes them so incredible, so unique, so beautiful.

This was a drawing we had to do based on the chapter "Symphony" from Daniel H. Pink's book "A Whole New Mind." We had to combine both the left and right side of the brain. By being instructed to draw a classmate with only 5 lines we are forced to use our creative side (the right), and the systematic side (the left) in congruency to make one image.

We were instructed to make two moments of light using only cardboard, and up to two other materials. My group decided to create a helix with plastic bottles found on campus and other various places.

With mine in particular I decided to play with the distance the bottles came out from the cardboard, and also have the bottom and tops of the bottoms. For my second moment of light I punched holes in a flower-like formation so that I would tie into my neighbor's composition.

“Abolished”

Every day I leave my apartment, I curse my OCD tendency, as I cannot pry my hand from the door checking a series of times to make certain I have locked it. I eventually part myself from the door, and go on about my business. I return home and take my keys from the pouch that keeps them safe and stationary, I unlock the door, and once on the other side I begin my ritual of checking the door once again. I hate the feeling causing me to do this over and over, day in and day out. I believe now that I may have created a system that will help me to abolish my ritual. I place the keys back safely in their pouch, and then return the pouch to a wooden holder. The holder is specially designed with several locking mechanisms that only stay in place when the pouch, and two metal rods are pushed through. The different locking mechanisms take a few minutes to complete making a lasting imprint on my mind that the doors too are locked. AT LAST! I finally feel comfortable to continue my daily tasks without having to continually check the doors.

Our next assignment is to take inspiration from various artists, and then choose one thumbnail to draw from our previous exercise, and exectute a similar style, or technique.

I found my inspiration from an artist's work that was found on the urbansketchers blog. The artist is Liz Steel . I love her "skecth-like" technique. Her lines are crisp, but do not have a "drafted" feel. She also has careful use of color with punches of it throughout the composition. It brings the drawing life, but does not over power it.

We were told to do some research and find a magazine layout that caught our eye, and to then apply it to a drawing of our own chronicling our first week back at school. This image jumped out at me because of its graphic nature. To me it symbolized our daily walk and the thoughts floating around in our head, ideas, to-do lists, past events, etc... I found it to be perfect for what I wanted to portray in my drawing.

The events I pictured are from right to left...buying text books, my Mom's car crash (she's okay, the car isn't), buying new supplies, studying for History and Theory, my ritual project for my studio class, textiles homework, and the ending to my week...playing with my roommate's dog who resembles "the blue dog."

Illuminated objects

Our assignment was to draw 5 objects illuminating them in some way, and possibly incorporating illuminated lettering. I chose 5 milestones in my life. For each major milestone in both my sister's and my life our parents presented us with some type of jewelry. For my first communion I was given a yellow gold cross, with a diamond at the center. When I turned 16 I was given a yellow gold blue sapphire ring (my birthstone). For my 18th birthday/high school graduation I was given a yellow gold pink and white sapphire ring. Then for my 21st birthday I was given a set of earrings and a necklace, both yellow gold, with matching pink sapphire stones to my ring.

I decided to illuminate each object by placing them on a stone, and drew mile markers with the age to represent which year these gifts were presented to me. I illuminated the "M" by making it into a road that traveled through each milestone of my life.

Dialogue...

I just realized I never posted pictures of my dialogue project...Oops!

The idea behind this project was to create dialogue between two spaces. We had to use 12 skewers and 12 4"x6" pieces of bristol board and we were only allowed to fold each piece of bristol board once, and we could not cut the paper.

This project was very difficult for me to wrap my head around creating ONLY two spaces. Something that sounds so simple was indeed quite challenging.

The dialogue in my project was that of the two spaces being comprised of the same materials, in the same pattern, only one formation used four cards, and the other, eight. I comprised them in a stacking motion, and therefore placed them on different planes on the skewers to continue the stacking idea. I had one set on a larger scale, and the other on a smaller scale.

In my first ideation of the project I tried to be in keeping with my "stacking" theme with my base and was told this too counted as a space. So I quickly went to a solid base with no layers or stacking.

For my project I interpreted the two spaces to be the rectangular shapes created by the cards of bristol board in the center of each piece.

This project has been a very long, and interesting process for me. It has brought more challenges, and excitement than any project before...

For this project we first started out exploring the effects of light, and the different elements, and how we could experience our own "moment of pause" with light by creating a luminaries. We had a few guidelines of course, these being that we were to use no more than three materials (two from previous projects, and to introduce a new material).

In our first project of the semester we used natural artifacts, and as I sat in my room in my apartment staring at different objects hoping for inspiration I spotted bamboo that I had cut down in Maryland and brought here to North Carolina to use as curtain rods. Inspiration at last! I began my planning process and that is what you see below with the use of towel paper rolls...

It quickly transformed into the real thing! I however encountered many complications. My binding agent (hot glue) would not hold the weight of the bamboo, and it would not stay secure to my metal base.

What next? I cut the bamboo in half using an ax and a sledge hammer (no fingers were lost in the process!), and glued it to a wooden base this time with super glue. It held, but I was advised that it would not last. So I again went back to the drawing board and was advised to cut notches into the wooden base and secure the bamboo (now being semi-circles) into the base. Unfortunately my bamboo did not come out to be perfect semi-circles and this would not work.

Change! Unfortunately as the materials were not working for me I had to change my materials. I was still able to achieve the same effect I was going for originally (warmth and glow). I created a frame out of bamboo skewers (used in several projects), and attached it to a foam core square base (used in several projects), and glued the leaves (natural artifacts) around the frame using rubber cement. It worked beautifully, but did not capture the true essence of a leaf.

Next, as leaf-like as I could get it. I created a base out of foam core once again, only this time in the shape of an eye, this allowed the leaves to take no true form other than that of their own form. I glued the leaves together in a shingle-like formation, and cascaded them down as far as they would allow me to go and finally brought the sections together and glued them.

All in all I am very pleased with the results!

We were given the task to find images of various light sources, and the projection/feeling/presence they create. The images below are mostly my photographs (except for when given credit otherwise). I enjoyed the exploration of the vast amounts of different light types, and actions. The beauty light creates is incredible. Enjoy. =)

We were next asked to research a series of artists who have experimented with light.

The piece below is by Marcel Wanders. I found this one in particular to be beautiful, and ornate. I love the way the light filters throughout the entire piece.

The next piece is by Yves Béhar. I love the motion that it creates, and how it illuminates in a crystal-like manner. It has such whimsy.

The next piece is by Patricia Urquiola. Her light fixtures appear to be very futuristic. This one in particular caught my eye because it demonstrates creative direction with the light source.

This piece is by Olafur Eliasson. I find their work absolutely stunning! The filtration of the light is incredible.

This piece is by James Turrell. The shadowing effect of the light is an interesting effect.

This one is by Peter Zumthor. This piece is similar to the light effect that I will be creating with my luminaire for this project.

This one is by Shigeru Ban. I love their use of natural lighting, and direction, shadow, and filtration using crossed pieces.

This next piece is by Tadao Ando. The use of direction and filtration throw narrow slits in the concrete is similar to the effect I will be creating with my project with bamboo.

The final piece that caught my interest is by Zaha Hadid. The use of the light creating an upward illumination was done in such a spectacular way. I immensely enjoy this piece.

The project consisted of 12 skewers and 12 4"x6" strips of bristol board. We were to arrange them in any way we wished, and incorporate a 12"x12" base. I chose to make a grid of sorts that was 12"x12" and to make it my base as well. I formed the strips of bristol board into wave-like shapes.

My first iteration is above.

This was my second model of the same design.

I also made a hot air balloon following the same guide lines, but found that it did not incorporate unity as consistently as the previous project, so I reverted back to my old design.

This is my third model with this design.

We were asked to take 4-5 leaves and draw their contour, blind contour, negative space, and a realistic drawing for our homework assignment.

The project was to construct a 4"x4"x4" cube leaving one face open out of bristol board. We were supposed to have defined edges. We also had to incorporate straws of our choice, and make the cube rise four inches off of an 8"x8" base.

To show defined lines of my cube I adjusted the contrast in a significant way.

I created triangular sections on the sides of my cube so that the edges would be defined and so that the straws would have purposeful place in the project. I created tabs on each side so that I could pull the tabs through, and make the sides flush, thus creating the cube. This is my second formation of my original cube. I used three tabs on each face. I found that with this construction of the cube the faces were significantly more flush than in my previous model.

As for my base, I made an 8"x8" form out of foam core and bristol board. I made it so that it looked like the missing face from my cube. I did this so that it would be in keeping with the rest of my project and give my cube a defined space on the base. I also designed it to sit a little off kilter to play into my story that the remaining face had fallen, and reconstructed a little (in essence blowing up (in size)).

My original cube as you see above only had one tab to each side. This did not allow the faces to sit flush which led to my reconstruction.

We then had to draw orthographic drawings of our model.

Various Morning Exercises

The first drawing is of negative space. A few chairs were arranged to force our eye/hand to work a little more careful with each other to train us how to look for the space surrounding, and shapes instead of identifying the object. I'm finding it difficult to do this, but I am practicing the technique on my own in hopes of honing the skill.

The second was a modified contour of the hand. You were supposed to close one eye, and only draw in a continuous line, only outlining your hand. I found the project to be freeing, and fun.

Next we had to draw a modified contour of Suzanne, Vanessa, Sara, or Tim. I had Suzanne.

The next morning exercise was to draw your classmate's vegetable or fruit with detail and shadowing.

Intersection

The object of the project was to combine fabric, paper, and thread to act as a container for an important object. I chose my blue crab plack that says "Fresh Blue Crabs Sold Here." I chose this item because I am from Maryland, and I received the object for my birthday to take with me here to North Carolina to remind me of home. I made a crab net out of red and black fabric because those are University of Maryland College Park colors. I also added two paper origami blue crabs, and connected them with orange thread (orange and black are Maryland state colors).

This is the object in its second stage.

I decided to change my intersection project into something different. This time I chose a prayer blanket as my special object. The blanket has a scripture sewn into it (Exodus 15:26 "For I am the Lord who heals you"). I received this blanket as a gift when I was sick with cancer to remind me of God's word, and His healing powers.

I lined the box with a similar fleece fabric of the blanket, and also covered the lid with the same fabric. On the outside of the box I created puzzle pieces out of paper, and wrote scriptures that were important to me on the pieces. I chose the colors because they reminded me of how God's word is alive, and colorful. I chose puzzle pieces because to me it symbolized the different parts of the bible, each piece fitting together an entire body of work, each piece connecting to something else, connecting to God.

I threaded the top of the box together using blue yarn (to include thread), and I also attached a handle across the top to make it easier to open.

Pure Contour

Our assignment was to draw a pure contour of the Foust building on campus. A pure contour is a drawing built up of lines without shading. I ran off the page with my drawing so unfortunately you cannot see the rest of the beautiful building.

The first morning exercise was to draw different feet in the class room given thirty minutes to do so.

The homework assignment was to pick ten food items and to draw them.

The next morning exercise was to draw a bag of your choice given twenty-five minutes. I chose my clutch I got from Laila Rowe in Maryland.

The next homework assignment was to draw five themed interesting objects, and their blind contours. I found in this exercise that I performed better drawing the elephants blindly.

Natural Artifacts

The object of the project was to combine two natural artifacts with something linear (for example string or wire). I chose to link a flower and a rock with floral wire to resemble vines that a plant or flower can make. I did this to be in keeping with a natural setting. I originally started with the flower in a different position, and recreated the flower in wire below the real flower (I will upload a picture of the original later to show the progression).

Frank Lloyd Wright

These pictures are of the Frank Lloyd Wright home, Falling Water, located in PA. I had the privilege of visiting this home, and also Kentuck Knob (another Wright home) in Spring of 2009. I am fascinated by his designs, his ingenuity, and his love for nature/incorporating nature into his designs. He was light years ahead of his time. I hope one day to have even a small fraction of his creative ability.
